Moving Home? Why Changing Your Locks Should Be Priority Number One

April 14, 2026

Getting the keys to your new home is an incredible milestone. Between unboxing the kettle, figuring out the boiler, and deciding where the sofa goes, home security is often pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.

However, as local residential locksmiths, we always give our customers one golden piece of advice: The day you move in should be the day you change your locks.

Here is why upgrading your domestic security isn’t just an upsell—it’s a necessity.

Who Else Has a Key to Your Castle?

When the estate agent hands you that shiny set of keys, it feels like you are the sole owner of the property. But consider the history of the house. Over the years, how many spare keys have been handed out?

  • Previous owners giving spares to family members or neighbors for emergencies.
  • Keys given to dog walkers, cleaners, or babysitters.
  • Copies lent to tradesmen, builders, or decorators during renovations.

You simply cannot know how many copies of your front door key are floating around Cambridgeshire. Changing your locks immediately is the only way to guarantee absolute control over who has access to your family and your belongings.

The Threat of “Lock Snapping”

While changing the locks, it is the perfect time to evaluate what kind of locks are protecting your home. Most modern uPVC and composite doors use Euro Cylinder locks. Unfortunately, standard Euro Cylinders have a fatal flaw: they are incredibly vulnerable to a technique called lock snapping.

Burglars can use standard DIY tools to snap a weak cylinder and manipulate the mechanism to open the door in under 30 seconds—and it makes very little noise.

How We Protect Your Home

At The Key Father, we don’t just replace like-for-like; we upgrade. When we handle domestic lock changes, we highly recommend fitting High-Security Anti-Snap Cylinders (such as 3-Star TS007 rated locks).

  • Sacrificial Cuts: If a burglar attempts to snap the lock, the front section snaps off, but the central mechanism remains perfectly intact and fully locked.
  • Anti-Pick & Anti-Drill: Hardened steel pins inside the lock prevent picking, bumping, and drilling.
  • Visual Deterrent: High-security locks often feature external branding that seasoned burglars recognize, usually prompting them to move on to an easier target.

The Key Father Verdict: Don’t wait until you’ve had a scare to think about your home security. Whether you’ve just moved into Alconbury Weald, or you’ve been in your home for ten years and want to upgrade to anti-snap technology, Stuart and the family are here to help.
